Span of apprehension in acute schizophrenics.

چکیده
Thirty hospitalized, acute, male, psychiatric patients (15 schizophrenics and 15 nonschizophrenics) were administered a full-report span of apprehension task. Contrary to previous studies which had employed a partial-report task, no differences were found between these two groups. From the two sets of findings, an explanation of schizophrenic deficit in terms of iconic (unprocessed) memory decay or general slowness in information processing seems untenable. On the other hand, differences in processing strategies, difficulty in disengaging from irrelevant stimulus elements, and difficulty in applying less familiar instructions remain as alternative explanations. The notion that partialversus full-report performance differences should be attributed only to differences in short-term memory loss is rejected.

Attentional Scanpath on the Span of Apprehension Task in Paranoid Schizophrenia
The Span of Apprehension task represents a putative cognitive vulnerability marker for schizophrenia. To investigate the nature of the scanning deficits on the Span of Apprehension shown by patients with paranoid schizophrenia a wide visual angle partial report version of the task was administered to 18 paranoid schizophrenics and 18 normal controls. An analysis of scan paths, based upon target...
متن کاملVisual Information Processing Deficits in Clinically Remitted Outpatient Schizophrenics
Twenty four remitted schizophrenics and twenty four neurotic depressives were studied on three measures of visual information processing, viz., simple reaction time, choice reaction time, and a forced choice span of apprehension test. The groups were matched for age, sex, and educational status. The remitted schizophrenics performed poorly on these measures compared to neurotic depressives. The...
متن کاملDistractibility in children vulnerable to psychopathology.
Children of schizophrenics (n = 36), unipolars (« = 57), bipolars (« = 60), and normals (n = 65) were evaluated on a digit span measure of distractibility with the distraction and nondistraction conditions matched for discriminating power. Whereas there were no between-groups differences in performance in the nondistraction condition, children of schizophrenics and unipolars performed more poor...
متن کاملSchizophrenics show spatial working memory deficits.
The present study demonstrates that schizophrenics are impaired on spatial delayed-response tasks, analogous to those that have been used to assess the working memory function of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in rhesus monkeys. Schizophrenic patients and two control groups, normal subjects and bipolar psychiatric patients, were tested on the oculomotor version of the memory task, a haptic ...
متن کاملThe early course of schizophrenic thought disorder.
The current investigation studied the early course of positive thought disorder and its relationship to other aspects of schizophrenic outcome. Forty-eight schizophrenics diagnosed using the Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC), 51 psychotic nonschizophrenics, and 67 nonpsychotic patients were studied at index hospitalization and at a 1.5-year followup. Most thought-disordered schizophrenics and ...
